3 Common Cooling Myths Debunked

Turn to Vastola Heating & Cooling to debunk any cooling myths. Our experts can answer any questions you have about air conditioning services.

Over the years we have heard many myths and misconceptions about customer’s cooling systems and how they do and do not work. Sadly, many are fooled by these common cooling myths and often actually put more strain on their AC system than necessary, wasting both energy and money in the process. Don’t fall victim to common AC falsehoods. Keep reading to learn more.

1. You Only Need to Change the Filters

Though changing the filters is important, there are a lot more tasks that need to be done to make sure that our customers’ cooling systems are in top shape. Among them are:

  • Cleaning the evaporator and condenser coils
  • Cleaning and straightening fin combs
  • Making sure refrigerant is at the right level
  • Checking for leaks
  • Clearing condensate drains
  • Checking the thermostat
  • Making sure the condenser unit is level

2. If the System is Running, It’s Fine

HVAC systems run until, all of a sudden, they don’t. Worse, they tend to quit on the very hottest, muggiest, nastiest day of the year. This is why it’s important to have a yearly check-up. This is especially important if the system is older and hasn’t been tuned up in a while. The Spring is an ideal time to check your system.

3. The Bigger the Unit, the Better

When it comes to cooling units, size does matter. How well a unit cools down the rooms in a customer’s home is determined by British thermal units, (btu), which are calculated by such things as the size of the rooms, heat losses and gains, and other factors. A unit that is too small is not going to cool the room enough to be comfortable, but one that is too large is going to cycle on and off all the time and waste energy and money.
