Advantages of a Mini-Split System
A ductless air conditioner functions exactly like a central air conditioner. The only difference is that a ductless system can only cool one room or space. A ductless system utilizes a condenser unit that sits outside the building and an air handler inside the building, usually either high up on the wall or in the ceiling. The air handler draws in hot air from the room, and the heat is absorbed by a refrigerant and then transferred back out to the condenser. This process results in cold air coming out of the air handler to cool the space.
Compared to traditional air conditioning systems, a ductless AC is far easier to install. All it takes is mounting the condenser unit outside of the home and then cutting a small hole in the wall for the refrigerant and drain lines to pass through. Finally, the air handler is mounted inside and then connected to the condenser.
Most ductless AC systems have only one air handler, which means they can only cool one space. However, there are also so-called multi-split systems that can have anywhere from four to eight air handlers connected to the same condenser and are capable of providing cooling to the entire building. One major advantage of this type of system is that you can independently control the temperature at each air handler without affecting all of the others.
