3 Ways to Clean Your Furnace

November 7, 2019

Throughout the cold season, your furnace works hard to keep your family warm and comfortable. To improve its efficiency, it’s important to keep your furnace clean. A dirty furnace can waste energy and be responsible for extra dust in your house. So, how do you go about cleaning your furnace? In this article, we’ll show you three essential ways to keep your furnace squeaky clean.

1. Change the Filter of Your Furnace

Look for the access panel of your furnace. It’s usually located on the outside of the unit. The access panel opens to the inside of your heating system. Inspect the filter. Is it dirty? If so, you’ll need to either clean or replace it. If you notice any loose pieces of dirt, you’ll want to remove them as well. You can find disposable filters at your local hardware store.

2. Clean the Blower Assembly

Unplug the furnace’s power source, including any generator or backup system. Next, remove the front panel and slide the fan unit out of the heating system. Using nontoxic soap, water, and a toothbrush, clean the blower assembly. Pay particular attention to the fan blades and the small spaces between them. Wipe down the motor until it’s clean. If you’re unsure about cleaning the blower assembly, you can have a furnace tune-up expert like Vastola Heating & Cooling help you out.

3. Clean the Interior

Before starting to clean the interior of your furnace, remember to unplug the power cord. Next, use a nontoxic cleaner, tap water, and a damp cloth to wipe down the entire interior of the furnace. Thoroughly vacuum the fan and replace it to its original location. Secure all the wires and screws, and then connect the power cord.
